Two days later Janna and Wondrous Woman out of costume, aka Samantha, approached The Goddess with a tray. It held their breakfasts, a giant mug of black coffee, and the bagel they knew was The Goddess’s favorite. Also on the tray was a small brown bag, clearly half full.

“You so totally did it. You are the best,” Wondrous Woman said.

They raised their coffee mugs in a shared salute.

“You needed my skills, but you did a ton of the work before even bringing me in. You figured out Professor Rogers had to be rescued,” The Goddess said modestly. “Did the prelim, and the second-story work.”

Wondrous Woman smiled. “It was my pleasure.”

The Goddess’s face sobered. “There was more going on than we knew. His second favorite site was rigged to cheat. The stuff that’s supposed to generate random numbers was programmed to pay off just enough to keep the suckers coming back. In other words, keep taking the money.”

“No lie,” Janna’s eyes were wide.

“What’d you do?” asked Wondrous Woman.

“A little link from my research went right to the FBI. And that’s not all.”

“Tell,” Janna said.

“He was suicidal. I found searches for painless ways to kill yourself.”

Janna covered her mouth. “Oh, no.”

There was a long pause.

Wondrous Woman broke the silence, reaching for the paper bag. “We saved a good man and a family. We punished the bad guys.”

Her friends nodded.

Her face brightened. “Bonus. We’ve got goodies.” She took plump oatmeal cookies out of the bag and handed one to each of her colleagues.

The Goddess took a bite. “These are amazing.”

The trio took a moment to eat and consider their startling results.

Janna recovered first. “We are” she said, “Avenging Superheroes, right?” A big grin spread across her face.

Wondrous Woman shook her head. “No, no, can’t be. Wondrous Woman’s in the other universe. Not enough females in Avenging Supers, either.”

The Goddess settled it. “Bunch of guys wrote it. Somebody’ll buy out the other comic company, and it’ll be one universe. We’re just ahead of them.”

They raised their coffee mugs again and toasted in unison, “Avenging Wondrous Women!”
